COMMUNITY GARDENNewport has created a Community Garden and offering individual households a 4' x 16' plot, or just the chance to participate in the community-giving plot with others that will be used to grow food for the local Friends in Need Food Shelf. The gardens will be located adjacent to Fire Hall #2, located at 973 Glen Road. In addition, if you would like to donate time, materials, or money for others so that plots can be initially established, please contact City Hall. The 2011 season was a huge success!! Several individuals, businesses and organizations donated their time and materials throughout the season to help the Garden grow. The City would like to thank the following for their donations: Washington County Statewide Healthy Living Program, Arnie Horn of South Suburban Rental, Bailey Nurseries, Steve Schottmuller, Emily White, and Newport on the Move. Newport on the Move had several plots known as the "Giving Garden" and donated that food to the Friends in Need Food Shelf. Over 700 pounds of fresh produce was donated to the Food Shelf in 2011! Spots are now available for the 2012 season! Click here to view the available plots. Click here to view the policy for the Community Garden. Individuals who would like a plot are required to sign the waiver at the end of the policy along with a payment of $20 for the season. If you are interested in participating in the program, or making a donation, please contact Renee Helm, Executive Analyst, at (651) 459-5677 or rhelm@newportmn.com.
