Newport's City Council is elected by the citizens of Newport. Each member serves a four year term on the Council, with local elections taking place in November of even numbered years. In January, each Council member is appointed as liaisons to the various City Commissions and Boards, including the Planning Commission, Heritage Preservation Commission, Park Board, and the Library Board.

The Council is responsible for passing ordinances and orders necessary for governing the City, setting budgets, and determining the direction of City policy, while protecting the long-term welfare of the City and its residents.

Any person wishing to have an item considered by the City Council may submit a request, along with pertinent exhibits, to the City office no later than 4:00 p.m. on the Wednesday prior to the following Thursday's meeting date (8 days prior to the Council meeting date). No item of business will be acted on unless it appears on the Agenda for the meeting or is approved as an addition to the Agenda by a unanimous vote by the Council members present.

Strategic Plan

The City Council and senior staff met to discuss short and long-term goals for the City of Newport while reviewing its strengths, challenges, and opportunities and last year's Strategic Plan. From this discussion, the 2014 Strategic Plan was updated and was approved at the June 4, 2015 City Council meeting. The Strategic Plan lists the City's mission and vision statements, past achievements, assets and strengths, and short-term goals that the City Council identified during its work session. The City will accomplish the goals through wise financial planning, progressive thinking, innovative solutions, deliberate risk-taking, and collaborative decision-making.
