The City of Newport contracts with Washington County Sheriff's Office for law enforcement services. Tthe full-time Sergeant for the City of Newport is Bill Harrell,

Per the contract, the County will respond to non-emergency and emergency calls for services, enforce laws and ordinances, investigate crimes, and other functions as requested by the citizens and business owners of Newport.

Below is some information on some of the services that the County will provide through the contract.

Patrol: The five Deputies and one Sergeant will be based out of City Hall and will continue to provide 24/7 police coverage in Newport. Additionally, they will continue to be at Newport Elementary patrolling in the morning and afternoon. To report an emergency, call 9-1-1 and to report a non-emergency, call (651) 439-9381.


Police / Accident Reports: To request a police or accident report, please contact Washington County Records directly at (651) 430-7600.

Permit to Purchase / Carry a Gun: Washington County handles permits to purchase and permits to carry. Click here to view more information or contact them at (651) 430-7600.

Fingerprinting: Fingerprinting is provided at the Washington County Law Enforcement Center, 15015 62nd Street North, Stillwater, MN 55082. Please contact Washington County Sheriff's Office at (651) 430-7900 to schedule an appointment.

Code Enforcement: Washington County will review any complaints that are filed regarding code enforcement. An individual may file a complaint by coming into City Hall, calling City Hall at (651) 459-5677, emailing, or calling non-emergency dispatch at (651) 439-9381. Once a property has been inspected and a violation is noted, the County and City will take the necessary steps to resolve the issue, which can include a warning or citation.

If you receive a warning or citation, do not ignore it! Instead, take the necessary steps to correct the issue(s) listed. Always feel free to call City Hall if you do not understand the notice or need more time to correct the issue(s). Failure to resolve the issue may result in additional actions such as fines, a formal court complaint, or City facilitated abatement.

Animal Control: Washington County will respond to all animal calls and the City will provide transport of animals if needed.
