The Newport Planning Commission meets the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.
The Planning Commission interprets and enforces the Zoning Code (City Code, Chapter 36). The Commission reviews land use proposals as a quasi-judicial body. This means it must follow the Zoning Code, objectively determine facts and draw conclusions from them, as the basis of any official Planning Commission action. The Commission also reviews and discusses changes to the City’s adopted comprehensive plan, zoning ordinance, and other related policies prior to making recommendations on final actions to the Newport City Council.
The Planning Commission ensures projects and proposals have had a full public review and helps prepare the Council for major planning decisions. The Planning Commissioners are a valuable community resource because they can focus solely on planning matters.
The Commission:
- Reviews and makes recommendations on all development applications.
- Offers recommendations to the City Council for final action on planning issues.
- Conducts public hearings and provides a forum for citizen input concerning specific planning applications.
- Reviews and makes recommendations on Conditional Use Permits (CUP), Planned Unit Developments (PUD), variances, appeal applications, and other planning-related items.
- Reviews and makes recommendations on proposed amendments to the zoning provisions of the City Code.
- Reviews and makes recommendations on proposed changes and amendments to the Comprehensive Plan.
- Acts as the City's Board of Appeals and Adjustments.
- Other duties may be assigned by the City Council or by state law.
